Can Glasses Help Me Succeed in The Workplace?

People often wonder if they should wear glasses to the office or go instead with contact lenses. Glasses can give you a more polished look, and while the choice rests in your hands, we have found a few studies that point towards the fact that wearing glasses can actually help you succeed in your office.

In this 2011 Swiss study it was deemed that accessories like eyeglasses were able to influence facial appearance. A typical stereotype being that people who wear glasses are more intelligent. One of the four experiments found that full rimed glasses gave individuals a more distinct look. The stereotype was also confirmed depending on the type of glasses worn. Rimless glasses yielded an increase in perceived trustworthiness. Some may consider being nearsighted and farsighted as a disadvantage, but these findings seem to point the other direction when it comes to success and employment in your office.

The office may not be the only place glasses can be an advantage. A paper from the American Academy of Ophthalmology concluded that people who wear glasses are correlated with higher levels of education. Some people hypotheses that this is because children with glasses are less likely to engage in competitive sports; perhaps for fear of breaking the glasses, and more likely to indulge in in-door pursuits like reading. Employers definitely want to hire intelligent employees, and the stereotype that people who wear glasses are smart certainly hasn’t gone away.

The topic of interviews also comes up quite often when we talk about eyeglass and if they should be worn or not. The short answer is that you probably should wear glasses to your interviews. Some of the traits associated with office workers wearing glasses are: hardworking, smarter, diligent, and intelligent. Not only that, but glasses have a way of making you look professional while on the job. You should take into account the type of frame as well. Opting for formal colored since sharp colors can be distracting.

We certainly think that wearing glasses in your workplace is a big decision, and based on some of the evidence you should never feel like wearing glasses is the wrong decision. The comfort and convenience alone make it worth while to wear your glasses in the office. Based off the evidence it’s probably a good thing to at least show up to the interview with your glasses on, and if you are worried about wearing them in the office you should worry no longer. Your glasses can definitely help you succeed in the workplace.
